What We Do

Working closely with the artist and crafts people of Bali has been one of the greatest blessings of our life. Many of the folks we work with are dear family and friends that we have know for many years. We work directly with them, ensuring they are getting the best price for their creations. We also have hand in helping to create new products that will appeal to western taste, while at the same time preserving the the cultural integrity of the crafts and sustinabilty of the raw materials as well.

Many of the beautiful treasures you will find in our store are one of a kind objects that our friends create or we have made to order\. We really make an effort to find something other than the mass produced crafts you so often see on the market today with an eye towards the unique and culturally significant.

We are also happy to accept your custom orders, if there is something you have in mind, like maybe a hand carved teak door or piece of furniture let us know. We are happy to see your project through the process of creation and quality control to delivery for you.

Mermaid sea goddess Balinese art hand carved statue

The Mermaid

exist in mythology around the world, including Bali where she is know as Putri Duyung which translates to Princess or Daughter of the Sea.

Our Putri Duyung

Is hand carved from Gray Hibiscus Wood, known for it’s beautiful full tight and smooth grain, as well as the two tone coloration of the wood. The artist has let the shape of the wood determine the sinuous curves of this voluptuous Goddess Putri Duyung. Her face is beautifully carved, each scale on her tail is meticulously detailed. The strands of her hair seems to be floating in the water.

Amazing detail and very smooth finish that only a master Balinese carver can achieve using only simple hand tools! Then and polished and waxed to a beautiful satin finish.

Deer Stag~Mahogany Wood Carving~Bali Fine Art Sculpture

Hand Sculpted Mahogany Deer

This beautiful deer was completely carved on the island of Bali by a skilled Master Carver from Ubud. This work is absolutely stunning in it’s detail! The form is very elegant and graceful. It is amazing to think that the Artist only used simple hand tools to carve this from one solid chunk of mahogany! It has been hand rubbed to a deep rich smooth finish! The wood is very high quality, tight grained, smooth as satin to the touch! A great work of Balinese art!

I acquired this carving several years ago, and at that time it had already been carved for at least 5 years, so I would estimate that this was carved around 1990. The wood is stabilized and cracking will not occur as is so common in many of the recent carving coming out of Bali today.

Balinese Barong Mask~Singa LION Topeng~art Indonesia

Story of the Barong

Barong is probably the most well known dance in Bali. It is also a story telling dance, narrating the fight between good and evil. This dance is the classic example of Balinese way of acting out mythology, resulting in myth and history being blended into one reality.

The story goes that Rangda, the mother of Erlangga, the King of Bali in the tenth century, was condemned by Erlangga’s father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow, she summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle, the layaks and the demons, to come after Erlangga. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were too strong that Erlangga had to ask for the help of Barong. Barong came with Erlangga’s soldiers, and fight ensued. Rangda cast a spell that made Erlangga soldiers all want to kill themselves, pointing their poisoned keris into their own stomachs and chests. Barong cast a spell that turned their body resistant to the sharp keris. At the end, Barong won, and Rangda ran away.

About this Mask

It is carved of local Balinese pule wood and is painted in typical Balinese style in an orange red tone with gold leaf embellishment. This is not a mass produced mask, but an authentic mask that was hand carved and painted by a dear friend in Ubud Bali, Nyoman Moyo and his family.

The mask has handles attached where the dancer in front would hold the mask while dancing. The mouth of this authentic mask is hinged and can open and close in a chopping motion. The chin has a beard of an organic black fiber from the palm tree. Please see more photos below.

Ganesha Guardian Mask

Hand carved from albesia wood on the Island of Bali, in the town of Ubud. This mask is Ganesh the Elephant God of the Hindu religion. He is known as the remover of obstacles and Lord of Wisdom, son of Shiva and Pravati . It is intricately hand painted and gold leafed in the traditional style. This mask is great over a window or door and is meant to be a protector or gaurdian to keep evil spirits or bad energy from entering your home. Sure to be a great addition to your mask collection, or a wonderful addition to any eclectic decor.

Complete with cord for hanging, the wings are removable for ease in shipping.

Extra care has been taken in crafting this one of a kind art work. The mask Trimurti represents the Hindu trinity of Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva. This is beautifully sculpted by the Balinese Master carver Made’ Tresna. Made’ has also chosen the wood very carefully and used the natural grain of the wood to further enhance this wonderful work. Made’ has done an incredible job as always with this unique one of a kind art.

Polished to a very smooth finish that only a master carver such as Made” can achieve using only simple hand tools! This art work has been signed by Made’.

Made is a good friend of mine and a very spiritual man and interesting. He comes to my house often in Bali and we talk for hours about many things. He is a very sweet and kind man and I love spending time with him and supporting him and his family by purchasing and promoting his art. He is also a Balinese Priest or Mungku for his village. I have many of Made’s works and will be listing them all in days to come.

This sculpture depicts the story of the Ramayana, the epic Hindu love story of Rama & Sita

This three dimensional work is done with much sensitivity. Carved from a single piece of high quality dense suar wood. It is truly amazing the way the artist has paid attention to every detail. Perfectly carved as only a Master Carver in Bali can achieve completely with simple hand tools. The thought and time that went into this unique carving are great. This type of carving is so full of depth and is hard to appreciate just from the photos. When you look at this carving it is hard to imagine how this could be done. It is very dimensional and deeply carved. It will blow your mind!

Rama and Sita are standing deep in the forest of superbly carved trees. Rama is standing protectivliy behind Sita. Sita is reaching for the golden deer who is trying to tempt Sita away from Rama.

Both Rama and Sinta are embellished with finely carved details, including headdress, collar and sarong. Their faces are very sweet with serene expressions. Their hands are perfectly carved and proportioned
